The Falling Weight Impact Tester determines the relative ranking of materials according to the energy required to crack or break flat, rigid plastic specimens or coated panels under various conditions of impact upon a striker by a falling weight. Designed to comply with ASTM Test Standard D5420 (formerly ASTM D3029), the Falling Weight Impact Tester provides laboratories with a means for assessing the failure of polymers under controlled conditions. The FWI inexpensively determines the impact resistance of plastics, laminates, paints, lacquers, varnishes, plating and siding. Heavy duty construction, unique specimen clamps and the standard safety shield makes this easy-to-use apparatus safe and durable for many years of reliable testing. The 42 in (106 cm) drop column is most commonly used. Other drop columns are also available. All columns are graduated in both English and SI units. The FWI is supplied with 2, 4 and 8 lb (908, 1,816 and 3,632 g) drop weights and a set of three different specimen holders with 0.640 in, 1.25 in and 3 in (13.3, 31.8 and 76.2 mm) clearance holes. Optional weights, different radii impactors and 72 and 96 in (183 and 244 cm) drop columns are available for meeting the requirements of ASTM D4226, D3679 and D2794.
